Easy, Quick and Precise: Concentration Determination Made Easy

To measure the concentration of substances you can use titration. However, this requires chemical know-how, sufficient time and the willingness to accept that the measurement does not cover the whole range. Or there is the quick alternative from Anton Paar – precise results at the touch of a button.

When determining the concentration of acids using titration the acid is slowly mixed with a standard solution of known concentration and the neutralization point is determined. This mixing procedure requires large amounts of acids and bases. The process is tedious and requires skill and experience as well as exactly measured glass vessels, burettes and pipettes. This configuration can also only be used for a limited measuring range (e.g. 0 to 10 %w/w).

Alternatively, the concentration can be measured indirectly using a density meter such as DMA 4500 M Chemicals. The device determines the density of a substance and calculates the concentration using integrated conversion tables. That brings many benefits, including: Results at the touch of a button, wide applicability, high reproducibility and repeatability across wide measuring ranges. The low sample volume of only 2 mL considerably increases the safety for users.

Specifics of the chemical industry

In the chemical industry, work with acids and bases, concentration determination of substances in organic and inorganic solutions, the observation of reactions in solutions and the analysis of specific solution volumes are all an integral part of the daily routine.

Handling dangerous substances is nothing out of the ordinary. However, if it is possible to avoid direct contact with these substances then that’s all the better. Unfortunately, when applying conventional measuring methods such as titration this is not possible. Dangerous samples must be transferred, stirred or mixed – placing users at risk.

DMA 4500 M Chemicals provides a safe and automated alternative for the special requirements of determining the concentration of chemicals. Typical errors due to incorrect temperatures during the analysis are avoided as the instrument can be set to measure at any temperature between 0 and 100 °C (32 to 212 °F) with an accuracy of 0.01 K.

It’s concentrated

DMA 4500 M Chemicals determines the concentration of more than 140 different salts, acids, bases, alcohols, sugars and many more substances. The conversion tables are integrated in the device and can be extended to suit individual requirements at any time.

DMA 4500 M Chemicals is resistant to even the most aggressive chemicals. The concentration meter is equipped with a modern PCAP Touchscreen whose surface is protected with chemically hardened glass. The measurement cell made of glass and the filling adapters made of Teflon are the only materials which come into contact with the sample. Maximum protection is therefore guaranteed. The sample is not changed by the measurement and can therefore be used for subsequent analyses.

The automated calculation of the results avoids the errors which can occur with conventional manual methods. The measuring settings of DMA 4500 M Chemicals are selected so that correct and precise results are obtained for the whole measuring range.

The high level of automation of DMA 4500 M Chemicals also includes sample filling and data transfer. Different available sample filling units can process up to 96 samples automatically. As soon as the measurements have been completed, the density meter processes the data and sends you an automatic email alert with the results, if required. The device then performs an automatic cleaning routine and is ready for the next measuring series.

The concentration is determined within a few seconds. Whereas in titration the obtained accuracy can be increased by using more sample, DMA 4500 M Chemicals delivers consistently precise results within 30 seconds. As the device is so easy and intuitive to operate, users are trained to use it in a minimum of time.
